Example Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) product comparison

A FLIR is used to determine a product's operating temperature. Although this method is not 100% accurate, it is the simplest way to determine if a product will last as long as the manufacturer claims. Lack of proper heat dispersion is the number one culprit when it comes to LED product failures. Typically, 90% of product failures can be seen coming from the internal power supply, also known as the driver. The driver is located at the base/neck of the bulb and is the main source of heat within the product. In this example we have used a 12V MR16 with an operating power of 4-7 watts with comparable light output.

FLIR1.jpg

You can see in the FLIR image that the driver is yellow, signifying a high amount of heat. It is literally cooking itself to death.

FLIR3.jpg

As you can see, the entire fixture of this bulb is heating up after only 500 hours of use. This bulb is in failure mode.

FLIR2.jpg

Although the heat disipation in the driver area is adequate, the bulb consumes 7 watts of power, nearly double that of the Think Pure Light MR16 4W. This bulb could see a lifespan of 2 years.

FLIR4.jpg

The Think Pure Light MR16 4W has a superb heat disipation capacity. In this image the driver displays as green, a good sign the heatsink fins are performing their job well. At only 4 watts of power consumed, this bulb will see a long life.
